NYT Journalist at Carolina Feb. 2

The New York Times journalist Jeremy Peters will be speaking at the University of South Carolina on Thursday, February 2nd at 5:00 P.M. in the Capstone Campus Room. A reception will immediately follow. His lecture is titled: Media and Advertising in the 2012 Election: A Reporters View on Message Management in Today’s Politics.

Peters’ visit is sponsored by The New York Times in Education and is a function of the readership partnership The Times has with the USC Student Government and Capstone Scholars.

This should be a great opportunity to learn more about coverage of the election process.

Paid Summer Internship in Multimedia

The Scripps Howard internship/scholarship provides a journalism or mass communications student, with a 3.0 GPA, a $3,000 summer internship at a Scripps Howard property or non-compete property. Thestudent must have at least 40 hours of credit (but no more than 100 hours ofcredit by the end of the current spring semester).

The internship/scholarship is for students in print and broadcast journalism, advertising, public relations and/or multimedia sequences that can work in multimedia – print, online, video, broadcast.

Students create great product illustrations

My students are working on their first class assignment, a product illustration. They need to photograph one object to SELL it. In the process, they learn to use their cameras better.

I also like this project by student Cat Metcalf, who photographed a guitar. These photos are similar, but you can see that putting the product in the light, rather than the shadows, makes a big difference in the visual impact.

Besides selling the product, I ask students to show me examples of long depth of field and shallow depth of field. The best photos are those in which the student used the proper apertures, and also used lens and distance to make the photo LOOK all in-focus or partly in-focus. Here’s one project that worked well.

Another exercise for students is to show me the difference between wide angle and telephoto perspectives. New photographers often have to train their eyes to recognize how different lens change their background and the “visual impact” of an image. These photos by Courtney Powers show it well.

Sam Cranston documents NASCAR from behind the scenes in his job as Photo Editor for www.scenedaily.com , and for NASCAR Illustrated.

Cranston’s images of the auto industry are captivating. For years, he led the photo staff at Daytona Beach News-Journal, where the world revolves around the Daytona 500.

Cranston will share his insights about various aspects of the photo industry as a photographer and manager for newspapers and magazines, as well as working independently. He is well known for being a strong mentor to young photographers.
